Marcus J. Martone has taught, coached and served as an athletic administrator for many organizations, including the NYSPHSAA from 1973-92 where he served as the Assistant Director and Treasurer until his retirement in 1992

Prior to his arrival as a NYSPHSAA employee, Martone was appointed as the Association’s Vice President in 1969-71 while he was chairman of physical education, head of boys interscholastic sports, and head football coach at H. Frank Carey High School on Long Island.  Following his two-year term as the NYSPHSAA President, Martone was honored as the Coach of the Year for his success with the Carey High football program in 1974. In 1974 he was appointed District Athletic Director for the Sewanhaka Central system which at that time encompassed five Junior/Senior High Schools and one Junior High School.

Martone has served on various committees as well. In Nassau County , he was President of the Nassau County Athletic Advisory Council from 1975-76 and President of the Nassau County Football Coaches from 1957-58. He also served as a panelist on the National Federation High School “New York State Modified Program”committee and  was a member of the National Federation of State High Schools Playing  Rules Policy Committee  from 1977-80 while he was also serving as President of the New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Association.

Martone earned a bachelor's degree from Cortland in 1949, then continued on to Hofstra University where he received his M.S. in Education in 1951. He also earned two additional 6th-year professional diplomas in Administration and Supervision from New York University and Queens College, respectively.

A Glen Cove, Long Island, native, Martone has been honored on numerous occasions for his contributions. In 1975 he was recognized by the Eastern States Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and the New York State Association for Health. Physical Education and Recreation as the Athletic Director of the Year. He also received the New York State Council of Administrators  Zone Award and the Ellis H. Champlain Award.

He has also been inducted into the Halls of Fame for the City of Glen Cove, Sewanhaka  High School and Carey High School. Carey High has also named their football field in his honor as well as the Hall of Fame wing in the school. Martone also was inducted into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

He played varsity football at Cortland, where he was awarded the Red Letter, and at Glen Cove High, where he graduated in 1944 - the same year he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He also played varsity  baseball and varsity wrestling for one year.

He resides in Ridge, N.Y. with his wife of more than 61 years, Stephanie. They have two daughters, Marcia and Cindy, both elementary school teachers and four grandchildren.

"The thing I remember most about Cortland was the close relationship between the students and professors," said Martone. "Cortland students and athletes were blessed to have so many outstanding teachers and coaches who instilled a strong desire, and determination to succeed."
